Former UFC, Bellator and ONE Champion Ben Askren, aged 40, has broken his silence for the first time following a harrowing medical ordeal. Hospitalized in June in Wisconsin with severe pneumonia caused by a staph infection, Askren underwent a double lung transplant less than one month after admission.
“I Died Four Times”
In an emotional Instagram video, Askren revealed that during his medical crisis his heart flatlined four separate times, with his heartbeat stopping for up to 20 seconds each episode. He admitted that he has no memory of the period between May 28 and July 2, and only learned what happened by reading his wife Amy’s journal.
Life‑Changing Weight Loss & Recovery Struggles
Askren lost approximately 50 pounds (around 22.7 kg) over a 45‑day hospitalization, dropping to 147 lb (~66 kg)—a weight he hadn’t seen since he was 15 years old. He is slowly regaining strength and relearning basic functions, emphasising both the physical and emotional toll of the ordeal.
Overwhelming Support from Community
Askren has expressed profound gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from fans, fellow fighters, and the wrestling and MMA community. He said it felt almost like attending his “own funeral”, surrounded by heartfelt messages and encouragement from peers such as UFC President Dana White, Henry Cejudo, Daniel Cormier, and others.
A reported £368,000 (roughly $500,000) anonymous donation significantly helped fund his life-saving operation.
Looking Forward: Coaching and Giving Back
Askren, a father of three, is now focused on recovery and is eager to return to coaching wrestling in Wisconsin, where he runs a youth academy. He says he is “more motivated than ever” to help others and give back once he’s physically able to do so again
